BAD VIBES

You know when you have one of those dreams that are so real you wake up not knowing what real life is. I had several of those dreams last night. I didn’t do anything differently when going to sleep so I’m unsure of what caused my horrific evening.

To start off the night I dreamt that I was at Kendrick Lamars concert but he wasn’t Kendrick at all. The beautiful lyrics of Halle Berry hallelujah came from a large white guy that kind of resembled Action Bronson. I woke up in a cold sweat because my whole world was upside down; I had to search Kendrick Lamar on Google to calm my nerves in order to fall back asleep.

Once I was back asleep I had another dream that had me yelling at my dogs in the morning. I came home from a long day at school and walked into my bedroom to find my Nike pool slides torn to shreds on the floor and my dog Juelz sitting there with a dumb grin on her face. Seeing this I woke up immediately yelling at my dogs saying “GET OUT I DON’T TRUST YOU” and then shut the door so I could sleep in peace knowing my slides were safe.

I looked up the meaning of a dog eating your shoes on a dream dictionary website and it said that it means someone vile is slandering you OR I’m going to get humiliated; so either way BAD VIBESSSSS!!!!!!!

At least I can sleep soundly knowing Kendrick is Kendrick.

COME EXPERIENCE DYSTOPIA

I’m in my last term at John Casablancas and my class and I have to put together a final fashion show. We have to put everything together from start to finish; the theme, staging, styling and fundraising is all done by us. Dystopia is our theme and if you don’t know what that is it’s “an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad” The inspiration came primarily from a toxic wasteland and from that we turned it into a post apocalyptic abandoned town scenario so it’s going to be super dark and fun.

In class we were all assigned jobs and one of mine was to put together and style the publicity photo shoot with my 2 very talented classmates Jerome Insorio and Douglas Alfaro-Ochoa, we all have similar taste so it was amazingly easy breezy putting this shoot together. The hardest part was finding a photographer and models, we spent days talking to various people and we managed to get Pong Yananissorn a local Vancouver photographer who’s style fit the mood of the shoot to a T and then also scored 2 in development models from Wilhelmina.

Fashion wise we decided on street style grunge mixed with “couture” grunge for the show and so I was in heaven doing the shoot seeing as I’m #1 die hard Nirvana lover and 90s’ gal.

For the shoot we had a mixture of plaids, Unif, chokers, 40 Decibels and skyscraper platform boots, lots of layering and for make-up and hair; that good wine colored lipstick and purposefully greasy looking hair.

I’m so excited the shoot turned out beautifully and really embodies our shows theme. You all should come out on June 16th and support the JCI students and also Covenant House, all net proceeds that are raised from the show go to them; so it’s a great cause!

If you would like tickets you can contact me at savannahcochrane@hotmail.com or they will be $25 at the door 6pm at Performance Works on June 16th

#NOTBANKSY

Graffiti art is becoming increasingly popular around the world; especially in places like Los Angeles and New York, but never Vancouver. Vancouver has murals and strategically planned, very thought out culturally relevant masterpieces that SCREAM British Columbia at you.

It wasn’t until this past month that Vancouver Street art got a little more interesting. It turns out we have our very own Banksy. The artist did so well replicating Banksy’s style that it went viral because people thought the infamous, faceless, creative genius had been to Vancouver.  Banksy himself  (whomever he is) posted the photo on his Facebook page with the hash tag  #notbanksy. It’s a pretty huge deal to have him recognize one of our local street talents.

Nobody likes me

Even Olivier Theysken, designer for Theory, Instagramed the art piece! Rarely does something like fashion or art that comes out of Vancouver get so much hype; it was really crazy to see the image come up on my Instagram feed from someone really recognized in the fashion industry.

Exposing or Praising  i ?

I’m super curious to know how other artists feel about the piece. I came across an article that said i was plagiarizing and when Banksy posted the image he was “exposing” the artist, not sharing the art with his fans. Personally I’m stoked and proud; it would be amazing for Vancouver to have our own upcoming anonymous artist roaming the streets wreaking havoc and controversy on the world!
